(Recipe trials will be back next week.) For those new readers who don’t know, I have been running 3-4 days a week since November. I only have about 25 minutes of actual running time on my lunch, so it isn’t a terribly long run, but it’s something! I started out running 1.25 miles in 18 minutes, and am now at 2.75 miles in 23 minutes. I am quite proud that I have improved this much in only three months! I know that for a runner, this isn’t much of anything, but it is something to me. And then something not so great happened.
A few weeks ago, I noticed that my knees were extremely red and hot, and slightly painful when I walked. I would only put the pain around a 3/10- nothing crazy but definitely there. I was pretty disappointed, I didn’t/don’t want to have to stop running. I asked an athletic therapist I know, and so I decided to ride the bike the next time I went to the gym to give my knees a break.
I was bored out of my mind. I know that there are some who love to ride the bike. I am not one of them. I only made it about 10 minutes. My knee was clicking every time I pedalled- not a good sign. I decided to run for the remaining 12 minutes or so. My knees were still red-ish and warm, but not painful. I have gone back to running but I’ve tried to keep the resistance lower and to not push myself to the max. My knees still keep getting warm/pink but not painful, so hopefully that doesn’t get to be painful. I have an appointment booked with my sports med doctor in a few weeks, he’s always incredibly helpful.
Interestingly, my knees did not hurt at with my yoga. I have continued to do yoga 5-6 days a weeks, and I am noticing the difference more than ever now. When I first started, I really felt like I was “losing time” from my evening. Now it’s just a part of my routine! I am challenging myself more and more with the sequences that I do. I am slowly moving onto to more difficult asanas, and I can really see the improvement. I’m going to do that Dancing Sheba pose, I am!!!!
Have you had any repetitive injuries? Any tips?
Until tomorrow,
The Historian!
