Canadian Thanksgiving, Make It Monday

Happy Thanksgiving, my fellow Canadians (and anyone else who wishes to celebrate)! Although a lot of the world thinks that Canada and the US do everything together, our Thanksgiving is the second Monday in October, instead of the fourth Thursday of November, and that is today!! Time to enjoy a cornucopia of different foods and sink into a food coma that is worthy of the longest nap possible. I thought I would share what exactly we have for Thanksgiving dinner, as there is a wide variety in what people actually have!

Kitchen Time Savers- Make It Monday

We all have busy lives and take more shortcuts than we would like, particularly in the kitchen. Of course it’s easier to simply stop at the grocery store on the way home or run to Starbucks instead of making things yourself, but with a bit of practice and creativity, you can save yourself time and work when you really need to! These are time savers that have actually worked for me and I use- sometimes Pinterest hacks aren’t quite as easy or successful as they would make it seem… These four suggestions are easy and fast, and don’t require any speciality equipment or skills!

Living Sustainably, Part I: Food

I’ve struggled with sustainability for a while in my own head. Obviously we all understand the importance for the planet and future generations but I think that a lot of us waiver when it comes to actually putting it into practice! For most of us, it takes a shift in the way that we think and a realisation that things may take a little longer or cost a little more. This is a three part series on small ways to foster and encourage sustainability in your own life, and today I will be sharing a few tips of being sustainable with food!

Infused Water, Make-It Monday

At the beginning of May, I shared that I’m trying to cut out pop! Aside from two instances where it served as mix for drinks, I’ve been doing really well. (And I don’t count those as a hit, because quite frankly, it was less than four cups total.) If you know someone who is looking to get into cooking but doesn’t know where to start, this is the easiest place to start; it’s also great if you are trying to cut down on your sugar or caffeine!

Soft Pretzels, Make It Monday

After my cinnamon bun post, I’ve been musing on what I can do with my remaining yeast packets! It doesn’t need to be used right away but I do find that if I let them go too long, I forget we have them and either buy new packets or end up staring at an expired yeast packet. So, I decided to go with soft pretzel bites- while a full pretzel will hit you a little hard on the calorie/carb side (I’m trying my best to stay healthy), this little guys will satisfy your pretzel craving while not being too much on the health side! UNSALTED BUTTER?!? A Food Rant.

I’m not going to lie, this is a hard time of the year for me to blog. I want everything to be Christmassy! This is the time of the year that I live for, so I just have a million ideas floating around my head. Also, Canadian Thanksgiving was a full month ago and Remembrance Day just passed, so there isn’t really anything in the way between me and Christmas now. However, I’m going to do my best to not overwhelm everyone with holiday posts, and if you think it’s getting to be too much, leave a comment or shoot me an email! Now that that is out of the way, today’s post is about food and cooking and baking- while there is a good deal of that during the holidays, we also eat year round (or so I hope). This is a loose collection of my thoughts and rants while searching for recipes, baking/cooking, and serving. Continue reading

The Crown is Finally Here-Planning Your Binge

I fully believe that if you are going to do a Netflix binge session of a new show, you need to make the day worthy of it. In the last year or so, there have been some fairly big shows to come out of Netflix, and they don’t seem to be slowing down any time soon. While I am more excited than any human should be for Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, so much so that I booked the day off of work and already have a post in draft form, I was just as excited for The Crown! I understand why there aren’t a ton of shows or films about the current, living Royal Family, but until The Crown, there weren’t a ton to choose from (The Queen, The King’s Speech, and Diana, though I don’t recommend watching that one…). A full year of waiting, as soon as I was home from work on Friday, Netflix was KING! (See what I did there?)

Trial- Homemade Mac and Cheese

I have decided to take my nutrition and health into my own hands, and that starts with not buying lunches at work. While mac and cheese might not be the lowest calorie option, I decided to give it a shot for two reasons: 1) I need to get more calcium in my diet and the milk and cheese will help, and 2) I’ve never made food ahead of time to freeze for lunches and dinners, so I wanted something familiar! I’ve actually not tried to make a cheese sauce before, so this was an interesting ride all around. Unfortunately, I only have a picture of the finished product- I was hurrying along and didn’t have time to take pictures during!

Trial- Chocolate Covered Strawberries

Chocolate covered strawberries are one of my favourite desserts/treats in the world. I am strictly a milk chocolate person (I know, I’m a pleb), and berries are my favourite fruit/vegetable to snack on. Sure, you can buy them at Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory and Laura Secord, but that gets expensive if you want to bring some to an event. So, I decided to make my own! Continue reading
