A Guide to The Nutcracker

The Nutcracker remains a beloved holiday tradition. For many of us, it is the first ballet that we see. And Tchaikovsky’s music is often one of our first introductions to classical music. And nutcrackers themselves are immensely popular, finding their way into many a living room and kitchen. If you have ever wondered about the history of The Nutcracker, were curious about ETA Hoffman’s book, wanted to know if the protagonist’s name was Clara or Marie, or even how to make The Nutcracker part of your celebrations, look no further! My Nutcracker Experience

In 2023, I had one of the most meaningful ballet experiences in my life- I was able to take part in a performance of The Nutcracker with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. As someone who has danced her whole life, it was truly something.

I was one of four walk-on roles in the party scene at the beginning of the ballet. We had period appropriate costumes provided by the RWB and one of the dancers was our lovely guide on stage. As a dancer, I actually really enjoyed being a seated guest at the party. I was able to watch the dancers from the side, a rare view. While the RWB’s production always looks spectacular from the audience, it is quite a different perspective to see it close up- the details in the sets and costumes makes it all the more impressive.

After the party scene, we were able to change into our own clothes and meet our friends and family to enjoy the second half. I’m incredibly grateful that the RWB gave me the opportunity to take part, and I will remember it forever.

The Nutcracker by E.T.A. Hoffman

The original ETA Hoffman story that the ballet is based on is similar to the production that we see on stage. However, the novel has more adventures in it, and is quite a bit darker than the ballet. (I wouldn’t read it with small children but if they are reading Percy Jackson or A Series of Unfortunate Events, they would be able to handle this.) It is a favourite holiday read of mine!

Enjoying Your Nutcracker Tradition

I originally wrote this post in December 2020 when many of us were still limited in who we could see and where we could go. Most of us can now go to the theatre, but colds and flus (including Covid) still flourish in the winter and sometimes we have to make the difficult choice to stay home. 

And whether or not you can go see a production in person, these are some fun ways to work The Nutcracker into your holiday celebrations!
