Continuing on with my sixth Ornament of the Day for 2019… I think that fashion history has been one of my favourite developments on the blog this year. I’ve been doing at lot of reading and research on my own, to pursue it in an academic setting. However, I’ve also been able to share it with you, my lovely readers. I think my posts on the Dior exhibition at the V&A and the Royal Women exhibition at the Fashion Museum cemented the tone of fashion history on the blog. And of course, who would I be without a vintage fashion ornament on my tree?
I promise that I am not exceptionally bad at taking photographs- the image on the ornament is rather fuzzy. There are two women in elegant, mid-to-late nineteenth century gowns, and they are pretty gorgeous. I can’t help but think that Alexandra, Princess of Wales (and later Queen) and her sister Dagmar (aka Tsarina Maria Feodorvna) might have worn such stunning dresses like this on one of their matching days… (Royal sisters, famous for matching, such a fascinating duo) And although you can’t see it, the red velvet back feels particularly luxurious.
I actually found this pillow at a maker’s market before The Nutcracker last year, quite a lucky find. I’m quite curious to know how they got the print on the fabric, but however they did it, it looks amazing. Some of my favourite ornaments have been completely random finds; you have to keep your eyes open. Sure, it doesn’t have anything to do with ballet or The Nutcracker. But it is elegant and striking on the tree, and the vintage fashion element is simply perfect.
