March 20th marks the start of Spring 2016; in just five short days, winter will be over! Because of my excitement, Spring is a proper noun here: Spring Spring Spring!
I can appreciate that people who don’t have dumpings of snow with a typical 6 month winter might not be as excited for spring, but in the middle of the prairies where we have snow from November to April most years, Spring is an excited thing! I never really enjoyed spring before I lived in Ireland. Here, March and April are still usually full of snow, and if it isn’t, it is melting snow with massive piles of sand everywhere. The sand leftover from the winter typically won’t be picked up until sometime in May- we are left with a dirty, gritty city. However, in Ireland, flowers starting blooming in late February/early March, everything was green, and I finally understood why people get excited about spring!
Since coming back home, Spring holds more promise for me! It might take a little longer, but I actively look out for the new grass, the buds on the trees, and the flowers that will be blooming hopefully soon! Sure, the ground doesn’t really look pretty but the spirit of Spring is enough for me. New life and all that jazz! I’ve made a short list of things to remind me that Spring is blooming during our gray and gritty days:
1.Buy fresh flowers at least 3 times
Seeing fresh flowers really makes me happy, and I only realised that in the last year. I plan on stopping roughly once a month, and picking up some bright and happy flowers! I don’t have a preference, so any of the specials will do- just something to perk us up!
2. Make use of my Hunter Boots
I adore my Hunter Boots- they are well-made, comfortable, and because they are black, they go with everything! I don’t like wearing them to drive as they are tall enough to catch the bottom of the seat, but I am wearing them pretty much everywhere else. They protect my legs/pants from all sorts of gunk and allow me to satisfyingly walk through any puddle I choose 🙂 Adulthood is magical.

3. Spend more time outside!
Winnipeg is having a particularly warm winter, and that is carrying forward to our Spring! It is warmer, sunnier, and calmer than it normally is, and I plan on taking advantage of that. I’m going to take Loki for as many walks as possible, go to the dog park as often as I can, and enjoy time outside with friends (with the help of above Hunters). While I am getting back on track with my exercise, and running or doing yoga (sometimes both) every day, sometimes it’s just nice to take a walk!
As this is my first Spring “all in”, what are your recommendations? What should I make sure to do to properly welcome Spring?
Until tomorrow (and Sunday!),
The Historian!

I love spring soooooo much. It’s my favourite month. After the long winter darkness, it feels like someone has finally turned the lights on!
