I will try my hardest to make sure that they are interesting to the general public, and not only specialist historians with years of training. I could spend the rest of my life happily ensconced in an archive researching; until that happens though, I will spread my love of history here! Evelyn Farr’s I Love You Madly- Marie Antoinette and Count Ferson: The Secret Letters is shedding light on the affair between the ill-fated Queen and her Swedish beau. Farr claims that the couple used numerous covert tactics to keep their affair secret, including invisible ink, codes, and select friends for communication! Now how is that for interesting history…
The oldest tea in the world was found in the tomb of Chinese Emperor Liu Qi! You might have tea stashed in the back of your cupboard that’s been there a long while, but hopefully not over 2100 years….
Not perhaps news, but this year marks the centenary of the 1916 Rising in Ireland. A crucial event in modern Irish history, the traces of which can still be seen today, the Rising led to the modern Irish state we know today. The Irish Times has an absolutely fantastic illustrated history of the Rising!
Elizabethan mathematician, scholar, and astrologer for Elizabeth I John Dee was apparently surrounded by a circle of skulls… until someone decided that it was too risqué. Who knows what those horoscopes are hiding??
A couple in Leicestershire has been holding hands for over 700 years– hope no one wants space! This is an incredibly interesting story to follow- for the last four years, a research team along with local historians have been slowly unearthing the lost chapel of St. Morrell. The finds have been amazing to see!
