Tomorrow on 16 December 2020 Jane Austen will be 245 years old. Or she would be if she was still with us today. (She would be my number one pick for an immortal!) I would like to think that she would be a cracking guest to have around at the holidays. So in honour of her birthday and the holiday season, it is time for my Ornament of the Day… My Jane Austen is a new addition to my tree, and I’m just sad that it took so long to get her!
Jane Austen Ornament
I admit, I attempted to buy a Jane Austen ornament while I was in Bath. At many places, and this exact ornament, actually. However, they were either sold out (in February!) or over £25, and I figured it just wasn’t meant to be. (I did find this gorgeous Regency teacup ornament, though!)
I spotted it when I was ordering my Mary, Queen of Scots ornament for £12.95, and I knew that it was coming home! I adore her little quill and book, of course Jane must be eternally busy writing.
Jane Austen and Christmas
Oddly, Christmas doesn’t actually come up a lot in Jane’s writing. It is mentioned in Northanger Abbey, Pride and Prejudice, and Emma, but nothing really in-depth. However, many people writing in the realm of Austen have created Austen-ish Christmas stories. Last year I was lucky enough to see Christmas at Pemberley performed by the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, and it was the perfect Austen-holiday tale!
