I find that summer is the best time to break into a new podcast. Many of us are out walking more, gardening, or just enjoying the lack of snow/bad weather. The more I have to listen to, the more walks I bring my dog out on! One of my absolute favourites is the City Breaks podcast. While travel is resuming with the world emerging from Covid-19, as of July 2022, flights are being cancelled left and right and gas is cripplingly expensive. Being able to travel while listening is a real gift, and one of my favourite hobbies!
City Breaks Podcast
Ideally, before a city break, you’d read up lots of history and cultural information to help you get the most out of your stay. But time is short, and that’s where our podcasts come in. We have done the reading and research to find out what you need to know and put it all together into a series of podcasts for each city we’re covering.
Each episode in a City Breaks Series takes a place you are likely to be visiting – perhaps a cathedral, a palace or a museum – and gives you the background information you need to really appreciate what you’re seeing, well-researched, but with a slant towards the quirky and amusing.
Why I Love This Podcast…
Firstly, Marian has one of the most pleasant voices I’ve ever heard. The podcast is incredibly relaxing, but still fascinating and engaging. Secondly, she really makes you feel like you are walking the streets of the city and seeing it for yourself. A lot of travel writers and vloggers struggle with that, but she has it down perfectly. And thirdly, she takes a very historical approach to her city guides. Obviously, as an historian, that is what I gravitate towards. However, I think that she brings out the most interesting parts of these places’ histories, and makes it appealing to anyone (historian or not).
Marian has covered several of my favourite cities, including London, Bath, and Edinburgh, as well as several on my to-see list like Florence and Seville. With each city covered in 10-30 episodes, you get to know your destination city in-depth!

Bath Episode 7- Jane Austen’s Bath: Obviously I had to feature an Austen-ish Bath post. All of the Bath episodes are like a warm cuppa on a cool morning, but the Austen episode is my absolute favourite.
