History in the Making

Fortnum’s 2025 Christmas Windows

This November 2025 trip to London (and surrounding area) was a massive one for me. I crossed off several bucket list items, including touring Buck House, visiting Jane Austen’s grave, and seeing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara (in Edwardians). However, one other major “must-do” item for this trip was to see some of the Christmas decorations and spirit in London. I was able to see Liberty London’s “Good Ship Liberty” for the store’s 150th anniversary, and the tree at St. Pancras. And at the top of my list? Fortnum’s 2025 Christmas windows!

I adore Fortnum and Mason. Yes, people pooh-pooh it for being for tourists but they have some fantastic blends, a fascinating history, and a gorgeous store that dates back nearly 200 years. Even if you aren’t planning on buying anything, it is more than worth visiting the store to see what food and luxury goods are on offer.

The Fortnum’s Christmas Phonebooth

What would an English institution be without a phonebooth? But of course, Fortnum and Mason created their own specific phonebooth in the children’s section. If the Kingdom of Sweets had a phonebooth, this would be it! (If you wanted, you could take photos in it.)

Because the store is so big, there are several different themes throughout the store. It makes for a particularly fun wander, especially through the food and related floors!

A Crocodile Christmas Cracker?

Unsurprisingly given the British love for Christmas crackers, this fantastical Christmas cracker above the table seems fittingly festive for Fortnums. I will say, it is places like Fortnums and Liberty that make me appreciate just how much work stores do for the holiday season. Is it self-serving because more of us go to the stores to see it all and end up buying something? Yes, but at least we’ve got Christmas cheer to enjoy! (And quite frankly, I was going to be buying tea at Fortnum’s regardless of the season- it is a tradition for me.)

“A Fantastical Christmas” Christmas Windows

Fortnum and Mason’s 2025 Christmas window theme is officially “A Fantastical Christmas”. We have narwhals, a Highland Coo, peacocks, parrots, and more all working with the Fortnum’s Christmas mice to get ready on Christmas Eve.

And even a fine fowl friend decorating the tree to get in the spirit! All with the help of our familiar red-coated mice to make sure everything is ready for the big day. (If you find yourself wandering along, I would recommend counting as many red-coated Fortnum’s mice as you can, as they are more than plentiful.)

The Fortnum’s Advent Calendar

As is the beloved tradition now, the twenty-four windows on Picadilly Street are turned into a full-sized calendar with each window a day. If you can, you must come at night to truly enjoy the calendar. (Your best view will come from across the street if you are able to pop over, watching traffic at least!)
