This past weekend, we finally did it- we went Christmas tree hunting for the perfect trees! If you have been reading my blog in the last little bit, I’m sure that you’ve figured out that I’m kind of an elf and kind of obsessed with the holidays. As such , Christmas tree hunting is kind of a big deal for me. The tree farm is out in the country, it’s a good drive from us but in the crisp clear weather it is usually a lovely drive! This is a trip that never disappoints…
On the drive I dug into Bolshoi Confidential and stayed comfy with a few throws. With the temperature -23ºC it was chilly but not cripplingly cold. My sister, brother-in-law, and nephew also come with us, so we all bundled up and headed out to the trees.
While our thirteen foot tree for the living room is ordered from Quebec for us, we do have to go hunt out the tree for my loft. This is a normal tree that is usually 6-7 feet tall, nothing particularly crazy! I wander about until I find the perfect tree and then Dad chops it down. (I’m not great with a handsaw…or really any saw… so I just supervise!) It was a clear and beautiful day, and this was the site I was greeted with:
I was absolutely fascinated by this Who-ville style trees- while I’m sure they don’t specifically try to grow them like this, I think that they are very fun to look at!

After tree hunting, we jumped on a sleigh ride. Dad took care of getting the tree wrapped up but the rest of us, including Tiny Kid (my nephew) took advantage of the horse-pulled sleigh ride!
We became fast friends. And by fast friends I mean they ignored me while I petted them and took this selfie…

Tiny Kid was a little uncertain of the sleigh ride, but I think that he ended up enjoying it. (Note the 2014 Team Canada Olympic mittens on my brother in law!)
I don’t think that regular visitors are allowed in this part, I just kept wondering what the staff are doing back here if none of the trees are cut. Is there some sort sort of secret Christmas tree farm ritual we aren’t allowed to see?!
The final part of our trip and the finished products (aka the Christmas trees actually decorated) will be up on the blog on Sunday! What I love about this trip is that it really showcases how beautiful the prairies can be in the winter- people often discount us as a destination because it is cold and fairly flat. However, I think that we still have some pretty gorgeous places like this that make us a worthwhile visit. In any case, it really brightens up my week and sends me into hyperdrive for Christmas!

The snow is so beautiful! We usually only have one snow storm a year where I live, and it’s not until February. Our whole city shuts down over 2+ inches of snow! We put our tree up on Dec 7, but I really wanted to have it up by the first!
I always want it up by Dec 1, but I always get outvoted 🙁 With real trees, I suppose the later date does mean it’s still green and lovely at Christmas, but I would still like it earlier… We kind of half shut down on the Tuesday before (it was a blizzard), but I want to say it was 8-10 inches and everything was still open (people were just late/missing haha)!
