The Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s Ballet in the Park is one of the most popular and memorable summer events in Winnipeg, and the tradition has continued for more than 40 years! Over the years I have been able to see several ballets that I wasn’t able to catch in the main season, as well as favourite featured pieces. A chance to get outside, bask in the sunshine, and enjoy our very own world-renowned ballet company for free- will you be going to Ballet in the Park this year?
Ballet in the Park is a wonderful summer tradition for Winnipeggers, and this year’s show looks like it will be incredible. A free performance held at the Lyric Theatre at Assiniboine Park, this year we will get to see excerpts from the RWB premier of The Wizard of Oz (premiering in May), excerpts from Romeo and Juliet, as well as the full length ballet, Carmina Burana! (You can read my review of Carmina Burana here). We will also get to see pieces from both the Recreational and Professional Divisions of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School.
I was lucky enough to chat with former RWB Principal Dancer and current Associate Artistic Director about Ballet in the Park, and how different of an experience it is for the dancers themselves. “The biggest difference is the dancers can actually see the audience, which normally they can’t because of the black of the theatre. There is a different energy because the dancers can see all of the support that they are getting from Winnipeg and the community!” I also was able to ask her what piece she was most excited about for the upcoming 2018-2019 season: “They are all fantastic, I am quite excited for The Wizard of Oz which hasn’t even been made yet! There is a little sneak peek at Ballet in the Park with two small pieces, but it hasn’t been finished yet.” Normally we don’t get to see pieces in progress, so this is a pretty big deal, and a great opportunity for the audience!

I am feeling VERY fortunate right now that I have been given these opportunities- most of us don’t get to interview the people that we look up to on a semi-regular basis. And Tiff is SUCH a talented photographer!! (Hiring her was definitely the right move haha!)
