World Ballet Day 2022

It is one of my favourite times of the year… World Ballet Day is returning once again! If you are new to the blog (or the ballet world), this is a big day for ballet. Dozens and dozens of ballet companies from across the world take part in this annual celebration of ballet. It is a free event and is hosted entirely online. Classes, rehearsals, interviews, performances and more are all streamed for our enjoyment. World Ballet Day 2022 will be happening on Wednesday, 2 November 2022, and is a must- see event for any ballet fan!

What is World Ballet Day?

World Ballet Day is a celebration of ballet! Ballet companies across the world open their studios, stages, and workrooms to us, allowing us to have a backstage look at the world of ballet. WBD was first hosted in 2014, with the Royal Ballet in London taking part everywhere and serving as an anchor company. In 2022, over 60 different ballet companies from across the world* will be taking part in the official program and streaming for us. Depending on how the schedule works out, there can be up to 24 full hours of coverage to enjoy. And yes, there can be multiple companies taking part at the same time, so you have options on who to watch.

*Unsurprisingly, there are no Russian ballet companies who will be taking part in the official celebrations. Both the Bolshoi and the Marriinsky have taken part in past World Ballet Days, but with the ongoing war in Ukraine, no Russian companies are included this year.

Where Can I Watch World Ballet Day 2022?

You can watch World Ballet Day in a few different places. Firstly, you can watch the streaming coverage of the Facebook or YouTube page of the specific ballet company. (Some companies also stream on Instagram, but that is not a guarantee.) All official companies taking part in World Ballet Day will be streaming for free- you will not need to pay or subscribe to anything to watch. I tend to set notifications on YouTube for the companies that I want to see so that I get reminders when they are going live.

Secondly, many companies will also host their live stream on their own website. Not all do, but many will! (It is typically just an embedded YouTube video.) The World Ballet Day page itself also hosts the official live streams: https://worldballetday.com/.

Note: Many live streams are only available for a short amount of time (typically 30 days). If you really want to watch a company, make it a priority to watch it in the next few weeks. (Some live streams do permanently stay up, though!)
