Happy Janeuary, friends! If you are new to Janeuary, we take the month to celebrate all things Jane Austen. I am a big fan of it, as January is horrifically cold in the middle of Canada, it is dark for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, and it is a long month. (We need some sort of holiday later in January- can someone sort this??) 2025 was a great year for books about Austen, and this was a later discovery for me. Despite the tranquil, even cosy, image of Austen and her work that still lingers in the popular imagination, her life in fact coincided with a period of intense, immense change, what is still sometimes called the Age of Revolutions. The American Revolutionary War began the year of her birth. By her eighth birthday, Britain had been forced to formally recognise the existence of the United States. The French Revolution broke out in 1789, when she was thirteen, and came close to home: her cousin Eliza’s French husband died under the guillotine. When she was 22, there was an uprising in Ireland. All through Austen’s teenage years and her early adulthood, the old certainties were being subjected to challenge, new ideas were springing up – about democracy and freedom, about slavery, about poetry, about the position of women.
This book takes a fresh look at Jane Austen’s life, inspirations and legacy, drawing on the latest research in an accessible and lively way. Coupled with a fascinating range of illustrations, the book will be the perfect introduction to Jane Austen for those just encountering her work for the first time to those for whom she is a familiar presence.
Why You Should Read This…
While most Austenites are fairly familiar with the Regency world, many of us are more limited to the direct locations and scenarios that appear in her novels. However, there are so many wider events and elements that greatly influenced her novels, and understanding them can make a massive difference in how you read Austen. (It isn’t that you can’t enjoy her novels without having that knowledge but that it makes for a different reading experience.)
One of the major strengths of The Worlds of Jane Austen is that Kelly weaves together Austen’s life, her novels, and many of the popular adaptations. Realistically many modern Austen fans discover her works first through adaptations, and they are a major part of the Jane Austen fandom and beyond. I love that she connects the history of the period with what we see on our screens and still read to this day- it emphasises that history is indeed still incredibly important.
And because this is an important element of reading for many of us, this book is beautiful. The illustrations are absolutely lovely, and the photographs included are also fantastic. This is a must-read for any Austenite!
