I’m a big fan of podcasts. I had a concussion some years back, couldn’t read or watch tv and had to occupy my time somehow. I started out with a Lost podcast (this was when Lost was cool and popular) but now have moved on to bigger and better! I listen to these podcasts without fail:
I found this podcast through UYDS (discussed next), it is a Game of Thrones podcast by two comedians. To be honest, I read all of the books thus far but gave up on the show. However, I still listen to it because it’s hilarious. In addition to the sarcastic coverage of fantasy HBO shows, they also regularly do “What You Should Be Watching” episodes that discuss different shows and movies across genres. The chapter by chapter GoT book club is pretty fantastic, too.
So, I love Downton as much as the next person. In fact, probably more than the next person but less than some. Sure, it went downhill at the end of season 3 (What have you done, Dan Stevens? Not much of anything. That’s cool, not like you were a crucial part of the story or anything…) but it’s still worth watching. I discovered this podcast about 2 months after it started and have been listening ever since. This is snarky recapping at it’s finest, and is more than worth a listen even if you don’t watch the show. “Fashion Backwards” and “Tom Repeats History” are two features that discuss different cultural and political issues of the time. (“Tom Repeats History” uses Wikipedia as its only source, but I think it’s coolio in this context.) They cover a wide range of shows and movies in the Edwardian period and do a pretty amazing job of it!
I’ve just come across this podcast, AND I CAN’T GET OVER HOW MUCH I HAVE BEEN MISSING. The two hosts discuss every English/British monarch from Alfred the Great to Elizabeth the second. They cover every aspect of their reigns (as much as the sources allow). There are different categories of analysis such as “Battle-y-ness” (my personal fav), Longevity, Scandal, and then the indescribable “Rex Factor”. I never watched X-Factor, it seemed dumb. But analyse English monarchs for a quality that can’t be put into words? DAMN STRAIGHT I’M LISTENING TO THAT. I must say, they do a great job of being mostly unbiased, and incorporate a good amount of original source material.
