History in the Making

Queen Elizabeth II’s Life

Queen Elizabeth II passed away on 8 September 2022 at Balmoral Castle, marking the end of a second Elizabethan age. With a reign spanning seven decades, she saw immense change and evolution in all areas of life. As an historian who studies the history of modern monarchy, I think that it will still be some time before we can make broader comments on her reign despite some trying to. (This would be why there is discussion about when we are able to make thoughtful comments on the past- we typically need time and distance as historians.) There is still a lot that we can dig into for now, though- let’s explore Queen Elizabeth II’s life!

Monarch of the Month: Queen Elizabeth II

This is a general overview of her life, from beginning to end with the major topics highlighted. (I must say, this was the most difficult Monarch of the Month to write- how do you figure out what to highlight in a seven decade reign?)

70 Books About The Queen

I originally wrote this post for The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee- it includes 70 books about Queen Elizabeth II, her family, her style, her homes, and even some fictional books about her. There is something for everyone in this list!

Queen Elizabeth II’s Most Iconic Outfits

These are some of the late Queen’s best known and most iconic outfits, including her 1953 Norman Hartnell coronation gown. You probably recognise several of these, if not all!

Fashion Rules at Kensington Palace

This 2013 Historic Royal Palaces exhibition remains one of my favourites. Fashion Rules featured pieces from Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Margaret, and Diana, Princess of Wales- each woman had a strong sense of style, and there were some incredible pieces on display. (Side note: if you want to see royal fashion on display, Kensington Palace is always a good bet!)

Queen Elizabeth II’s Jewels

The British Royal Family’s jewellery collection is unmatched and I am saying that knowing that they absolutely own many pieces that we have no knowledge of. (At some point, I hope we get some sort of catalogue or foundation like Sweden has done, but I know that is a long shot.) I’ve gathered up some of my favourite pieces in their collection by jewel; luckily, there are some incredible pieces to pick from.
