Each Wednesday I’m going to be sharing a quick life tip with you- it might be a style tip, something to help when you are speaking to people at work, or even a reminder for house or car maintenance. These are things that I have learned along the way through experience, and am passing on to you now! Today’s tip is about tone and expression…

Tone and expression are crucial to strong communication skills- I could be telling you that you won a million dollars, but if I angrily shout it at you, you probably aren’t going to hear what I say, are you? Having a neutral tone of voice and facial expression can go a long way when you want people to listen to what you have to say. (This is particularly true in both the workplace and with people that you don’t know, and those groups can overlap frequently!)
I don’t believe that everyone has to smile all of the time, but I also don’t believe in “resting bitch face”- there is no reason to actively scowl or menace at someone. I am not smiling a lot of the time, but I am typically not grimacing. When you need someone to be receptive to what you are saying, a neutral expression can help a lot! For the next few days, pay attention to what your face is doing while you talk to people. Do you smile a lot? Are you often frowning? Is your tone quite harsh, or are you speaking quite loudly? These things can help no matter what your profession or role is at work, and can even help in your personal life!
Please share this if you found it useful, and share your best communication tip in the comments!
Cheers,
The Historian
