Back again for more Christmas movie history! For many of us born in the 1980s and 1990s, this is one of the movies that has defined our holiday season. We hear “thumpity thump thump, thumpity thump thump” and we are In. The. Spirit. Let’s get our mittens and scarves on, and look at Frosty the Snowman!
Synopsis
The snowman of song becomes a movie star in this animated film narrated by Jimmy Durante. The plot centres on the silk hat that brings Frosty to life, the magician who wants his hat back, and the school kids who want to protect their icy friend. Deadpan comedian Jackie Vernon is the voice of Frosty. Directors Jules Bass and Arthur Rankin Jr. were also responsible for a sequel, Rudolph and Frosty’s Christmas in July, and a number of other Christmas-themed animations, including Nestor the Long-Eared Christmas Donkey and Pinocchio’s Christmas. The History of Frosty the Snowman
Frosty was written in response to the exceptionally popular 1964 Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. And although the animation styles are very different, they were both created by the same company- Rankin Bass. Audiences love Frosty; it has aired every year since it premiered in 1969. It also happens to be Jimmy Durante’s last film!
My Review of Frosty the Snowman
Even though I am now in my early thirties, I still watch Frosty ever year. It has that classic nostalgia that just cannot be topped, and I appreciate its place in the Christmas canon. I also like that it is quite short; at only 25 minutes you can easily watch it in between activities or if you are short on time. (It is also great for little ones with short attention spans!) It wouldn’t be the holiday season without Frosty the Snowman!
