Given that a lot more of us are walking and spending time outside, many of us have more listening time on our hands now. And podcasts are perfect listening material! There are many, many history podcasts out there. For quite a while, we had limited choice, but now there are more new history podcasts dropping each week. I admit, I am very picky about podcasts, though. I need a certain amount of research in a podcast, not too much off-topic chatting, and decent production. And I’ve absolutely found that in the Hashtag History podcast!
What is the Hashtag History podcast?
The Hashtag History podcast looks at all sorts of areas of history, and looks at “controversy, conspiracy, and corruption”. Every podcast has to find their angle, and I think this is a great one. I’m still catching up on their catalogue, but I have listened to episodes looking at Ptolemaic Egypt, seventeenth century North America, and 1980s American crime history. It does skew slightly more towards American history, but both hosts are American, so it makes sense! As someone who doesn’t look at American history very often, I am learning quite a bit.
Rachel and Leah work really well together as hosts! They have a great balance of humour and fun with the history. It very much feels like you are sitting with friends chatting about history- it isn’t a lecture style podcast, and it is a lot of fun. If you are like me and can’t connect with your regular history peeps, this is a wonderful alternative.
Favourite Episodes
So far, my favourite episodes are episode 5: Akenhaten/Amenhotep IV (because I just read a book on his wife, Nefertiti), and episode 22: Who Killed Jane Stanford? (because I had no idea that there was a Jane Stanford, or that there was such a mystery behind her death). Given that as historians we tend to focus on a few hyper specific areas for our own research, Hashtag History is a wonderful way to broaden our knowledge.
