I’m back with another personal Style File Friday (fashion history will be back next week)! I’ve been quite excited to share this with you for a while now. If you missed my 2020 Style Goals post, I’m working to have a more thoughtful wardrobe. Limited to 24 purchases over the whole year, I’ve got to make them all count- including accessories. And, I’ve become an ambassador for Closest to Crowns, one of my favourite discoveries of 2019! So, why do you need Closest to Crowns headbands in your life?
How Did I Find Closest to Crowns?
I discovered Closest to Crowns through one of my favourite things, Six the Musical! I follow all of the Six queens on Instagram, as you might guess, and Natalie Paris (the original West End Jane Seymour) shared a gorgeous pearl headband. Thankfully, tagging people is still alive and well on Instagram, and I was able to find Closest to Crowns on Etsy. I enjoy just how easy it is to message sellers on Etsy, and I messaged immediately to find out if I could have a few custom-made headbands.
Who Is Closest to Crowns?
Alexandra is the wonderful woman behind Closest to Crowns! She runs the entire business by herself, from sourcing materials to selling and shipping products. I more than appreciate being able to support a small business, and a female-led business. In this day and age of social media and more information, I still find it harder to get to know people. However, Alex is incredibly open and friendly on her social media! At least for me, part of supporting small businesses is getting to know the people behind them, and that has been lovely. She is creative and intelligent, and I share a lot of the same priorities with her. (More on that below!) If you ever have any questions for her, feel free to message her on Etsy or Instagram.
What Is the Point of Closest to Crowns?
As her bio goes, “Headbands created with crowns in mind”. While I love tiaras as much as the next girl (possibly more than the next girl?), it is arguably difficult to find anywhere to wear them these days. These are unique, one of a kind headbands that give a lovely nod to crowns, something we can all use. They are a statement headband without being a costume piece. And that quite frankly, is becoming harder to find. I ordered a purple based pearl headband to wear to the Canadian premiere of Six, and a red one to wear to Anastasia in Toronto. They aren’t so out-there that I can’t wear them in daily life, though!
Also, Alex prioritises sustainability. She finds her materials in charity shops and sales, to remake into your headband. That not only means that your headband is certainly unique to you, it means that she is giving something a second life. While I can’t fathom the creativity and skill it takes to see a necklace or bracelet, dismantle it, and make an entirely new headband, I’m thrilled that I can at least wear one myself.
