We are back again with another Song of the Day! As I’ve been out and about for various errands and appointments, I’ve heard a lot of holiday music in the last few weeks. And there is one song that is included on pretty much every single playlist despite being a sore point for roughly half the population. Yes, it is not always the same version/ style that is included but those who dislike it don’t care either way. And I am sure that you might have an idea of what song that is. A Truly 90s Christmas Song
Mariah Carey released “All I Want for Christmas Is You” on 29 October 1994. It was included on her Christmas album, Merry Christmas, which was somewhat unique in that very few artists at that time released holiday-themed albums.
Carey wrote the lyrics for the song herself with Walter Afanasieff in the summer of 1994 and specifically aimed to write an upbeat song. While other songs on the album do have a religious theme, “All I Want” notably does not.
How Do People Feel About “All I Want for Christmas”?
This might just be the most divisive question of the holiday period- people either love or hate this song. Critics almost universally loved this song, and continue when it is reviewed upon re-release. The average person? Well, then it can go either way.
Many artists have released their own cover of the song in pretty much every genre available. While the original Mariah Carey version might not be on the playlist that you heard while shopping, it is almost a guarantee that a version would be.
