Something that I love about the community I have here is that everyone comes from different places and different experiences but are still open to trying new things- this month’s book is all about trying something different for me. Sometimes trying something ends in terrible disaster but sometimes it might end with you finding a new favourite book, and I think it’s worth giving it a shot! Rivers of London, Ben Aaronovitch (aka Midnight Riot)
Normally I won’t be doing this, but this month I have decided to feature my current book club pick- Rivers of London! As I am re-reading it for book club, I wanted to share exactly why I love this book so much. I won’t lie, other than Harry Potter, I really wasn’t much for fantasy- I didn’t have anything in particular against it, it just didn’t grab me. I often find that fantasy is too fantastical and it either just seems unrealistic or overly complicated. However, when RoL was suggested to me, I was intrigued. I had never heard of urban fantasy, and it seemed like it might be a good possibility for me. Ben Aaronovitch’s Peter Grant series is set in a very real place that truly grounds the story, with London not only a notable background but a major character in the story.
Probationary Constable Peter Grant dreams of being a detective in London’s Metropolitan Police. Too bad his superior plans to assign him to the Case Progression Unit, where the biggest threat he’ll face is a paper cut. But Peter’s prospects change in the aftermath of a puzzling murder, when he gains exclusive information from an eyewitness who happens to be a ghost. Peter’s ability to speak with the lingering dead brings him to the attention of Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Nightingale, who investigates crimes involving magic and other manifestations of the uncanny. Now, as a wave of brutal and bizarre murders engulfs the city, Peter is plunged into a world where gods and goddesses mingle with mortals and a long-dead evil is making a comeback on a rising tide of magic.

Earl Grey Vanilla, Tetley
Even though it is freakishly hot summer everywhere, including here in Winnipeg, there are still cool mornings and the occasional chilly day. Tetley’s Earl Grey Vanilla tea is one of my favourites- there is the perfect hint of vanilla without being overwhelming or overly fake. I also wanted to share this tea because it’s pretty widely available, and I think that most people (regardless of location) would be able to buy this if they wanted. Sometimes you just want a comfort drink, and this tea is exactly that!

I just finished Midnight Riot for book club and enjoyed. My sister also read it – she joined book club too! Will definitely be checking out this other books.
