History in the Making

Why waking up late is one of my biggest annoyances in life.

Yesterday, I woke up late. I hate being late, I am absolutely hate it. I would rather be 20 minutes early than 5 minutes late. I like to budget the appropriate amount of time for things, and plan ahead. Thankfully I had my lunch and everything ready to go, and I was only about 10 minutes late leaving, but still. I was thrown off. *I have done well with using a cell phone as an alarm for 3 years, but this is going to signal my return to an alarm clock.* I am always early for work, usually about half an hour. It allows for any road/weather conditions, I get a good parking spot, and I can take my time getting started in the morning. Yesterday morning, I had to do my make-up at work. I do not like variation in my morning routine. Grrr.

It really bothers me when people are habitually late because the message that sends is: “You are not important enough for me to be on time.” People in Alpha Gam are always running late, and it’s just waived off as “Alpha Gam time”. This is my one pet peeve about Alpha Gam, and I don’t hide the fact that it bothers me. Especially for chapter meetings- this is a business meeting, be on time.
Over my life, I have developed systems to ensure that I am not late (or at least only rarely late). First of all, you have to think about what you are going to be doing. Will you need any extra clothing or shoes for anything?  Those can easily be gathered the night before. Do you need a meal? I try to make all of my meals the night before, as well. I try to bereally efficient and make my lunch for the next day at the same time as my dinner. I’m in the kitchen, anyways, right? Do you need any medication/lotion/lip balm, etc.? In the middle of Canada, dry skin is a huge problem, so yes, lotion IS needed.
I usually have little to no “packing” to do in the morning before I leave. Other than missing my alarm, I typically allow myself 10-15 minutes to wake up in the morning. Some people absolutely NEED their sleep- this isn’t me, I will admit that. But gone are the days that I stay up past about 10:15pm on a weeknight. I have learned to make getting to bed a priority. I like being able to calmly wake up in the morning, make my tea, and get ready for the day, and not feel like a crazy person.
What is your morning routine? Your evening routine? Do you not have one?
Until tomorrow,
The historian!
