History in the Making

Watercolouring Painting

I have mentioned it a few times prior on the blog, but I very much enjoy watercolour painting. I find that it is a perfect balance between focus and relaxation for me!

Growing up, I was always in Art and not Band at school, as I didn’t have enough time to practice an instrument with ballet taking up most of my time. As such, I was lucky enough to try my hand at drawing, watercolours, acrylics, oil, mixed media, clay, plaster, pastels, and pretty much everything save for silk screening. My particular favourites are acrylics and watercolour, depending on what I am doing. Anything not on paper is almost guaranteed to be acrylic- it’s easy to work with, relatively inexpensive for what I do, and you can paint over it if you are unhappy with it!

Watercolours are typically more finnicky than acrylics, but I do love the gentle style of watercolour. 95% of my watercolours are done with watercolour pencils- they allow for soft or sharp lines, pale or intense colours. I would recommend them to any beginners! I like working on architecture and landscapes, and I find I can strike a perfect balance of fine detail and general shapes with the pencils. My weapon of choice? Staedtler Watercolour Pencils!

Here are a few of my recent works- please forgive the quality of pictures. They have been gifts for other people, and I am terrible for remembering to take a picture before I give it to them!

I’m hoping to work on some pieces closer to my logo- perhaps making a small watercolour for each of my regular features! I need to practice general sketching again, though- it would be completely different shapes than I am used to, and I want to have those base skills first.

Do you practice any particular form of art?? Do you have any favourite artists??

Until tomorrow,
The Historian!
