In the Northern Hemisphere, we are in the grips of summer. And with summer comes outdoor events! We are seeing the widespread return of outdoor events this summer, and are ballets, symphonies, operas, plays, exhibitions, and more in the great outdoors. These events are always a lot of fun, but can be a little different than traditional performances or exhibitions indoors. So, to help you out, here are my 3 tips for enjoying culture outdoors!

1) Wear/Bring SPF and Sun Protection
This may seem obvious to some, but please make sure that whenever you are spending time outside you are protecting yourself from the sun. Skin cancer is not a joke and rates are rising. Bring your sunscreen and hat, and wear loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing! And of course do not forget to re-apply every 2 hours. (Yes, people make fun of me for re-applying my sunscreen but it really is not difficult to do and could save you a LOT of hassle and grief later on.)

2) Pay Attention to Those Around You
I will admit, this is one of my biggest pet peeves. Whenever I go to Ballet in the Park and Symphony in the Park, and other events like that, people seem to forget that there are other people around. They will talk loudly, stand up during the performance, and block people’s view without a second thought. Do not ruin these outdoor events for other people!
Make sure you are generally aware of people around you. If you are sitting on the ground or in an outdoor theatre, do your best to make sure you aren’t blocking the view for the people behind you. And if you are at an outdoor gallery or exhibition, remember to move along and allow other people to watch. Indoors or outdoors, these are shared cultural events.

3) Bring Food/Drink (If Appropriate)
Some outdoor events will not allow you to bring in outside food, but for the most part, you can bring your own food and drink in. I’ve gone to many outdoor cultural events with friends who are shocked at the exorbitant cost of basic food and water- it will always be expensive. If you are happy to treat yourself and spend whatever, go for it! However, if you will be grumpy and upset at high prices or hangry from not eating, bring your own. (And you should be able to bring in a bottle of water, if nothing else!)

This upcoming week, I will be enjoying the RWB’s Ballet in the Park, and have my bag packed and ready to go!
