DIY Harry Potter Christmas- Ravenclaw Style, Make It Monday

My office really embraces decorating for the holiday season, and clearly I am just about as gung-ho as it gets. Last year I went with a Whoville/Grinch Who Stole Christmas theme, which was a ton of fun! This year I decided to go with a Harry Potter Christmas theme, specifically Ravenclaw (because I’m Ravenclawesome) and although it took a fair bit of creativity, I’m pretty proud of the whole set up. I will post an “after” picture in the next few weeks after it is all up at work, but I’m going to share the individual elements today for you. The goal was the keep the set up under $50 CAD and be as easy as possible, and I met that goal! Anyone can duplicate this set-up (and make it to your House) with a little effort.

Butter Tarts, Make It Monday

Butter tarts are a quintessentially Canadian recipe, and regional variations can be found all over the country! I know that every country and region claims that their food is the best, and while I completely accept that some Canadian food is kind of weird and bizarre, butter tarts truly are the best of the best. I’ve given butter tarts to many people visiting Canada, and they have been enjoyed every single time! (The same can’t be said of nanaimo bars, ketchup chips, and poutine.) This is an easy to make recipe for butter tarts, for the perfect addition to your holiday menu!

Peppermint Trifle, Make It Monday

Trifles are one of my favourite desserts to make; they are usually fairly easy to make and they present well with little to no extra work. Normally I make brownie/whipped cream/strawberry trifle but I was hosting friends for an early holiday party and I wanted something a little more wintery and festive. So, I decided to get creative and tweak the recipe a bit in order to fit the theme a little bit better- this recipe is perfect for any skill level in the kitchen!

Canadian Thanksgiving, Make It Monday

Happy Thanksgiving, my fellow Canadians (and anyone else who wishes to celebrate)! Although a lot of the world thinks that Canada and the US do everything together, our Thanksgiving is the second Monday in October, instead of the fourth Thursday of November, and that is today!! Time to enjoy a cornucopia of different foods and sink into a food coma that is worthy of the longest nap possible. I thought I would share what exactly we have for Thanksgiving dinner, as there is a wide variety in what people actually have!

Double Chocolate Fleur de Sel Cookies, Make It Monday

After treating myself to my new Bobbette and Belle  cookbook, I knew that I was going to have to make at least one recipe this week to christen it, and I was  little overwhelmed by all of the choices, to be honest. I almost went with a loaf or muffins for classic fall comfort food, but we were having dinner with some friends and I never arrive without dessert- cookies it is! I’m still trying to work on expanding my repertoire in the kitchen and I have never worked with salted sweets before, so I knew what choice I had to make- Double Chocolate Fleur de Sel cookies.

2 Ingredient Ice Cream, Make It Monday

Me being an ice cream addict and someone who spends far too much time in the kitchen finally gave into the ice cream recipe that is sweeping across Facebook, Pinterest, and every other form of social media out there. I’m always hesitant about miracle recipes that promise the world (and the food) in the easiest of ways but I figured that at the very most, I’m out $8 and a few hours. So, with the allure of ice cream I set off…

Kitchen Time Savers- Make It Monday

We all have busy lives and take more shortcuts than we would like, particularly in the kitchen. Of course it’s easier to simply stop at the grocery store on the way home or run to Starbucks instead of making things yourself, but with a bit of practice and creativity, you can save yourself time and work when you really need to! These are time savers that have actually worked for me and I use- sometimes Pinterest hacks aren’t quite as easy or successful as they would make it seem… These four suggestions are easy and fast, and don’t require any speciality equipment or skills!

Infused Water, Make-It Monday

At the beginning of May, I shared that I’m trying to cut out pop! Aside from two instances where it served as mix for drinks, I’ve been doing really well. (And I don’t count those as a hit, because quite frankly, it was less than four cups total.) If you know someone who is looking to get into cooking but doesn’t know where to start, this is the easiest place to start; it’s also great if you are trying to cut down on your sugar or caffeine!

Make It Monday- Watercolour Painting

This first weekend, I tried something a little different- I’ve done three different Paint Nites now. I’ve enjoyed all of them and I would recommend it to anyone no matter what your level of experience is. I personally love painting, both in acrylic and watercolour mediums, and I inherited that from my grandfather. He is the talented artist in the family, and I always love getting advice from him. One of his Christmas gifts to me was a painting workshop with a local artists, and this past weekend it finally happened! I learned so much as a painter, and I could not have had a better Saturday. I’m going to share some of what I learned this weekend… Continue reading
