Strawberry Ice-Box Cake, Make-It Monday

The weather is getting warm, the sun is staying up late, and it’s the time that you have friends over and you head out. So, that means more potlucks and barbecues- easy and light recipes that don’t keep you in the kitchen and feeling heavy afterwards. This couldn’t be an easier recipe and it can be thrown together in less than 5 minutes- this ice box cake is the perfect summer recipe!

Infused Water, Make-It Monday

At the beginning of May, I shared that I’m trying to cut out pop! Aside from two instances where it served as mix for drinks, I’ve been doing really well. (And I don’t count those as a hit, because quite frankly, it was less than four cups total.) If you know someone who is looking to get into cooking but doesn’t know where to start, this is the easiest place to start; it’s also great if you are trying to cut down on your sugar or caffeine!

Make It Monday- Watercolour Painting

This first weekend, I tried something a little different- I’ve done three different Paint Nites now. I’ve enjoyed all of them and I would recommend it to anyone no matter what your level of experience is. I personally love painting, both in acrylic and watercolour mediums, and I inherited that from my grandfather. He is the talented artist in the family, and I always love getting advice from him. One of his Christmas gifts to me was a painting workshop with a local artists, and this past weekend it finally happened! I learned so much as a painter, and I could not have had a better Saturday. I’m going to share some of what I learned this weekend… Continue reading

Make It Monday- Sugar Cookies, Take 2

As you will know from my Snapshot Saturday post last week, I recently purchased the most wonderful cookie cutters from The Gingerbread Cutter Company on Etsy! I still love them, they make a very clean cut and they are easy on your hands- metal cutters will often get harder to use when you are making double and triple batches, but the plastic eliminates that issue. Linda was kind enough to also provide recipes with the cookie cutters, so I decided to give the sugar cookie recipe a try!

Tools of the Trade, Make It Monday

After my cookie cutters arrived on Friday and I knew that I would be testing out the cutters (and one of the recipes that came with them), it started a train of thought through all of my various cookie cutters. I find baking quite peaceful and calming, and I think that this is the perfect time of year to give out some spring and Easter baking! I do have more cookie cutters than just these- this isn’t including any of the Christmas cookie cutters, I have more of those than most people should…- but these are some of my favourites, and for different reasons.

Make It Monday- Cinnamon Buns

You don’t know this, but my family tends to get a little obsessed with cinnamon buns. There used to be a bakery in Gimli that had these huge, delicious cinnamon buns that we would get every single weekend at the lake, and bring some home to freeze. Fast forward to roughly 2010, and the bakery closed. *cue weeping and uncontrollable shaking from cinnamon bun withdrawal* We have since found another bakery on the way to the lake that makes the same old fantastic cinnamon buns, but in the meantime, I’ve discovered that I kind of like making them myself. And I do!

Make It Monday: Sugar Cookies

After years and years of searching, after mediocre cookie after mediocre cookie, I have finally found a sugar cookie recipe that I love. I’ve gone through more sugar, butter, and flour than any baker should, and spent more time rolling out failed dough that my rolling pin would like. This post is the celebration of a baking victory- I can finally offer to make cut cookies for events and celebrations, and if nothing else, eat them myself…. Without any further adieu, my sugar cookies!

Make It Monday- Waffles!

A new feature on the blog will be Make It Monday, where I will share a recipe or DIY that I have recently tried! (If I don’t have one, it will be an open post.) As I’ve discussed in earlier posts, Santa was very good to me and brought me a waffle maker. In due time, I will be making a tater tot waffle but for now, I’m sticking with a classic, standard waffle recipe. This came with the waffle maker, and so far it’s treated me fairly well.
