It seems unbelievable, but we already find ourselves in summer! (Or winter, for those lovely readers in the Southern Hemisphere.) I have to say, while I wish I could go about with a bit more freedom, I’m used to this home bound life. I’ve got more time for reading and research, less commuting, it is a lovely rhythm. However, summer is the perfect time to make some temporary changes. Today I’m sharing my summer 2021 plans for An Historian About Town and for my research!
Bite-Sized Posts
I will still have new posts on Sundays (Culture), Mondays (History), Wednesdays (Books), and Fridays (Style). However, starting on 27 June all of my posts will be bite-sized with regular full posts resuming on 8 August. This allows me to have more time for other projects (see below), for you to still have new posts to read, and for me to share different topics/ histories. I should still be around on social media, so feel free to reach out anywhere. And if there are any smaller episodes/ biographies/ books, etc. that you want to see covered, please let me know.

#AnHistorianReads Persuasion
The #AnHistorianReads book club has continued on throughout the last year, and it has been a lovely reprieve from the stress and difficulty of everything. Starting Saturday, 25 June we will be reading Jane Austen’s Persuasion. We read three chapters a week, and you can join in the chat at any point during the week. With several Persuasion film adaptations in the making, there is no better time to read (or re-read) Austen’s second Bath novel.

PhD Applications and Research
My biggest focus for the summer will be PhD applications and preliminary research. I am planning on applying to several different UK schools for Autumn 2022, and because funding will be a major determining factor, I will need to have my materials reading for Autumn 2021 (many funding bodies work up to a year out). If I seem quieter or not as present, I’m probably focusing on that. (Luckily, I’ve planned several long weekends throughout the summer to give myself more time.) If you have any advice, please feel free to send it my way! And if you do want to reach out, please do feel free to. My goal is in no way to disappear, and I’m always happy to chat history and culture.
