If you are newer to the blog, you might not know that the Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s summer event, Ballet in the Park, is one of my favourite events of the year. And if the weather cooperates, tonight I will be seeing the 2022 Ballet in the Park. In honour of the event, today’s Style Bite is heading back to the ballet. For Style File Friday this week, we are looking at one of the RWB’s most avant garde costumes…
The Royal Winnipeg Ballet
The Royal Winnipeg Ballet is the oldest continually operating ballet company in North America, and one of only four companies across the Commonwealth to have the Royal designation. It is a world-renowned company, and as you would expect, have some pretty incredible costumes from over 80 years of ballets.
The Navigator from The Magic Flute Ballet
This particularly “out there” costume from the 2003 ballet belongs to the Nagivator. This ballet is based on Mozart’s opera of the same name, and features the composer’s music. If you aren’t familiar with the story, the RWB explains it well:
The Magic Flute, depicts a land between the sun and the moon, where the Queen of the Night beseeches Prince Tamino to save her daughter from Sarastro and offers a magic flute as protection. Reason and virtue confront irrationality and evil in this singspiel for the ages, as the hero attempts to uncover the truth before it’s too late.
The Navigators are supporting characters but their costumes are anything but background pieces. When I saw this in person, I will admit to be slightly stunned. The chaos of the giraffe print paired with the bright blue and brown floral shirt and hot pink ruffles makes a statement. And it is a statement that works perfectly for The Magic Flute!
