I just finished listening to the Rivers of London series, and I’m sad that I will now be waiting another year for the next book. I would have to say that although Foxglove Summer was fun and interesting, it didn’t develop the overall storyline too terribly much. Still, I was left wondering, what audiobook should I listen to next?
I like listening to audiobooks on my commute, I can usually get at least an hour in a day from that alone. I also like listening to them while I am baking/cooking/cleaning. Needless to say, I needed to find something fast! And I came across Ready Player One. I am about 3 hours into the 16 hour audiobook. When I worked at a bookstore, I was constantly being told to read this but I never got around to it until now.
It started off really interested and Cline does fairly well developing this future state of the world. However, every 10 minutes or so, we get a huge dumping of 80s pop culture in the form of lists. Lists of TV shows, games, movies, bands, directors, etc. For anyone born up until about 1992, this gets repetitive FAST. We alllll know that Jon Hughes was a huge director in the 80s, we don’t need explanations of his movie. On the flipside, his explanations of virtual reality are helpful and interesting. Prior to this book, I hadn’t even given virtual reality a thought, so it’s filling out the storyline for me.
I should be finished sometime next weekend, I will post up my final thoughts then!
