Traditionally in May, I pick a theme for the month and explore it in depth. Each week, 1-2 posts will be on the chosen theme while the rest are “normal” and varied (as usual). In 2020, I looked at Queen Victoria and in 2021, May was all about Lucy Maud Montgomery. This year, I am sticking with the general theme of historical women, and heading into the world of dance. May 2022 will be Margot Fonteyn Month on the blog, and I’m incredibly excited to share one of my favourite dancers with you!
Who Is Margot Fonteyn?
Margot Fonteyn is one of the most famous dancers ever in ballet history, and the only British prime ballerina assoluta. (You will learn more this month!) She also was a massive celebrity and a fashion icon, and for thirty (or more) years was known the world around.
Fonteyn’s Lasting Impact
As you might imagine, Fonteyn had a lasting impact on ballet. And it is a big enough impact that even the casual ballet-goer would notice its effects. Ballet education and training, the Royal Ballet, and even choreography in general has a shadow of Fonteyn throughout.
…Gunrunning?
Fonteyn had a- quite frankly- bonkers life outside of ballet. And yes, that life included gunrunning at one point. I will be looking at Fonteyn and her dance career, of course, but I will also be looking at her outside life and marriage, and her impact on fashion and celebrity. She led a fascinating life, and deserves a lot more attention from the wider world. I am incredibly excited to finally be sharing this with you, it has been in the making for a while!
