This is a big week for sneakerheads. On Wednesday 8 July, the Dior x Air Jordan shoes will have launched! At the time of editing (4 July), over 5 million people have registered to have the opportunity to purchase the sneakers. Yes, you have to register for the opportunity to even attempt to purchase them. This isn’t the first time that a luxury designer has tackled sneakers, though- not even close. (With a luxury price tag, to be sure!) The Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto has several different examples, but these Christian Louboutin studded sneakers are one of my favourites!
Christian Louboutin shoes are known for their stiletto heels and red soles. (Yes, you can get a thicker heel or a flat, but they aren’t as common as the stiletto pumps.) In the 1990s, Louboutin specifically wanted to bring back the stiletto, to give the appearance of longer legs. The large majority of their products are made for women. However, they do now design for men as well- including sneakers….
Louboutin Studded Sneakers, 2011
Louboutin didn’t open a men’s boutique until late 2011/early 2012, but he embraced it. Soon after opening it, he started designing sneakers, and these Roller-Boats are one of his first men’s designs. You will notice that although they are sneakers, they do still have that infamous red sole. Although they don’t have the same appearance as his usual stilettos and pumps, it still stands apart from regular sneakers.
If you are looking for a pair for yourself, you will be looking at close to $1500 CAD (before taxes). Sneaker hype is real, and sneakerheads are definitely willing to pay for their kicks. It is easy to see how in less than 50 years, Louboutin has embedded himself in shoe history!
