Covent Garden Floral Snapshot

I know that Covent Garden is a tourist hotspot in London, but between the history of the market itself and the Royal Ballet at the Royal Opera House, it is one of my favourite places in London. I actually visited twice on this trip, but the second trip on 19 Feb was particularly beautiful. The Covent Garden floral displays were gorgeous, and made me excited for a spring that I won’t see in Winnipeg until mid-May (or later, if we are unlucky…)

Whomever actually runs Covent Garden does a wonderful job of keeping the area clean and beautiful. Not only are there several trash receptacles (not that common in Europe) to make sure that litter has somewhere to go, there are floral displays all over the market! The Covent Garden floral carts are the perfect nod to the past, and make me appreciate that life might start again sometime this year. I know that it was an unseasonably warm February for the UK, but I loved being able to see blooming flowers all over the place! And now I really want to see carts used more often in decoration…

My early trip to Covent Garden for my Royal Opera House tour (post will be up tomorrow!) didn’t feature quite so many flowers, but by the time I was back to see the Royal Ballet perform Don Quixote a week later, there were flowers everywhere! This trip has also made me realise that I know little to nothing about identifying plants. While I will be actively trying embroidery in the spring and summer, I am hoping to passively start learning the names of flowers and greenery as it comes up. (I am about 80% sure that these are purple carnations, but I wouldn’t swear to it.) Something I would love to know is if the plants chosen for the floral carts have a particular meaning for the market, or if they just happen to be in season. In any case, they are still beautiful to look at and enjoy!
