While I fully expect that royal life will settle back to normal and royals in both Britain and elsewhere are going to be busy with normal engagements until their summers start, interest in the royals is still fairly high (if my traffic is anything to go by). And luckily for those interested, we have a new fun summer rom-com from the Tower of London itself… I normally stick to non-fiction and historical fiction books here but one of my Book Goals for 2023 was to branch out. Why You Should Read This….
If you have heard of the author who lives in the Tower and ISN’T a Beefeater, it is Megan Clawson! Her father is a Yeoman Warder at the Tower of London and she just so happens to live there as well. This book is set at the Tower (and around it), and draws on Clawson’s life experiences. It certainly makes for a unique rom-com right out of the gate.
I loved this romance- it was a lot of fun, and with all of the excitement around the coronation, a perfect 2023 read especially. Clawson’s passion for history in general and the Tower specifically is more than evident and it makes for a fantastic experience as an historian reading it. Throughout the novel, you get several different myths and legends related to Tower history, and I think it sets this rom-com apart.
I also adored that this story was very much centred around Maggie, and not solely her romance- we were able to get to know Maggie as an individual rather than solely as a love interest! While I recognise that most romances obviously focus… on the romance… I felt more invested in this book because of Maggie’s solo prominence!
