Bath Abbey Snapshot

I know that a lot of people get bored walking around cathedrals. If you aren’t truly interested in them, they can blend together easily. However, I love taking my time and wandering through each and every one of them! I adore that although each cathedral tends to have a very unique and interesting story and life, they all tend to end up in roughly the same place. It can take a bit of hunting for the details, but when you do find them, it is worth it! Bath Abbey is one of my favourites to date, and there are quite a few secrets hidden in plain sight…

The West Front of Bath Abbey is quite gorgeous. You walk through a beautiful stone gate, pass the Pump Room and Roman Baths on your right, and are greeted by this church. If you aren’t looking closely, it looks much the same as other Gothic and English Gothic cathedrals. However, when you start to look closer at the carvings, you notice a lot more.

We did a tour up the Abbey’s tower, as well as did a walking tour around Bath, which started at Bath Abbey. I didn’t notice those ladders on either side of the main door until our walking tour! The angels are climbing Jacob’s ladder up to heaven, which you can actually see scooting up. If you look at the ladder on the left, the angel second from the top is actually descending back down from heaven. Interestingly, he is coming down head first. I’m not sure if that is angel-specific thing, or if I’ve just been using ladders incorrectly… In any case, now when I look at any pictures of Bath Abbey, it is the first thing I notice!
