I’m not sure why this happens but I’m pretty sure it happens to all of us- I am currently in a spurt of receiving a constant string of “Please check out my blog” comments. On principle I usually don’t check out these blogs, but occasionally I do and… I am left confused. Why did you think that I was going to be interested in your blog about car maintenance? I know the answer, people mass drop links everywhere possible to try and build followers but quite frankly, it is sloppy and alienating. Today I’m sharing what it is that *I* look for in blogs, and a few tips on how to leave effective comments!
I have decided to take a step in blog accountability- I will be doing a “State of the Blog” post twice a year, in July and January! I find it incredibly frustrating when bloggers talk about having growth but don’t give you any tangible numbers to work with. Did you grow by 200%? Does that mean that you grew by several hundred followers, or you added 10 followers when you were starting with 5? And what are you doing to achieve that growth? Do I need to pay to hear anything actually useful? In these updates, I’ll be sharing my percentage of growth, as well as the current number of followers, and what I have been doing for each social network to grow!

I think that most bloggers, whether hobbyist, professional, or somewhere in the middle, will all love different things about blogging- some love the community, some love having an outlet, some love the extra income if they have it (who wouldn’t?), and countless other aspects. However, what a lot of bloggers won’t actually discuss is the downsides of blogging, and they exist for all of us. If you are committed to growth, there is no way around it- a blog is a commitment like anything else, and there are aspects of it that can make it difficult and draining. I hope that this post can shed some light for the non-bloggers out there and offer some comfort and camaraderie to the bloggers out there, a nod to what actually makes blogging difficult!
For anyone who is any tiny bit of serious about their social media, be it for a blog, for work, for interest’s sake, you will have undoubtedly heard about having a theme for your social media. Does every single one of your Instagram pictures feature the same filter, with the same colours, with the same subject? Well, you don’t have a theme, and if you want to be any sort of successful, you need a theme. Do all of your pins have one of three to four layouts within a specific image size, with a set number of keywords in your description? You don’t have a theme, either. Good luck getting any traffic… or so that is what we are told.
Hi everyone! For anyone following my blogging updates, you will know that I’ve been spending the last few months tackling and investing some time in Pinterest. I’m feeling like I have more of a handle on it, and a bit more focus! My attention is now on Flipboard- I have to say, even if I wasn’t blogging, I would keep Flipboard. There are quite a few magazines that I follow, including several history and style. I’m enjoying being able to save/share those “official” posts with anything else I want. (I share a lot of my favourite posts from other bloggers there!), without being crammed full of just pictures.

I try not to blog too often about blogging, as it is for an incredibly small audience, and I don’t think that I am an authority on what you should or should not be doing on a blog. However, sometimes a question strikes me and if it sticks for long enough, I will share it here to hopefully open up a discussion. Lately, I’ve been thinking about the proliferation of bloggers that have a store on their blog, and a course, and an e-book, and a YouTube channel, and services, and this, and that, and and and- is this becoming the norm for bloggers? And are we expected as bloggers to have all of these things?
With the year slowly winding down (or up?), I’ve been spending more time thinking on my blog- where it’s currently at, where I’ve come from, and where I want it to go. I firmly believe that blogs are living things that grow and change with us (or away from us), and it’s a good exercise for any blogger to take stock of what they are creating and publishing.
Pinterest is a hot topic in the blogging world. I think it’s calmed down in the actual world, but it still consumes hours upon hours of bloggers’ lives and it’s very much considered an integral part of blogging for many people. Each form of social media is a living and breathing animal that behaves however it’s creators want (which is completely unbeknownst to the rest of us). In my quest to educate myself, I’ve tried to find as much information as I could about Pinterest, and after much thought, these are the conclusions that I arrived at!
