M and I always have movie dates, every time we see each other, it’s one of our traditions. Sometimes it is a movie that we have been waiting to see for months (even years), and sometimes it is a movie that we just picked. Kingsman fell into the latter category. And it was a surprise!
M and I both thought this was a fantastic movie, very entertaining with some unexpected twists! Colin Firth is a badass, as per usual. Nothing like secret agents in impeccably tailored suits to make you feel like they have everything under control. Michael Caine also makes an appearance, not surprising. I’m fairly certain he has to appear in a certain percentage of English films, by law. Mark Strong was brilliant- for once, he isn’t playing the villain, and he proves that he is just as strong (hahahahaha, PUN.) for the good guys. M remarked that it was very Tarantino-esque, and it is- lots of action and gore to the point of comedy.
Positives:
1) Colin Firth is confident and suave, he gets. the. job. DONE. (That being said, I still don’t understand people being in love with him.)
2) Mark Strong fights against evil (and type casting) and almost steals the show.
3) There’s a pug. A PUG. A pug with a smooshy face who couldn’t be more adorable.
4) There are a couple of twists you just don’t see coming. I am the type of person who will watch a movie even if I do know everything that is supposed to happen, but it is nice to be surprised.
Negatives:
1) Blade girl (I think her name is Giselle?) was completely distracting and kind of a bitch. Did they just chop her off at the knee so that she could have blades for shins/feet? It was incredibly distracting when she would walk around the room.
2) Samuel L. Jackson’s accent- I get that he is supposed to be an eccentric billionaire, but it was irritating.
3) Dean (the stepfather), a caricature of a man that is just an all-around horrible person. I can’t say my full opinion without spoilers, though.
If you are considering Kingsman: The Secret Service at all, I would certainly recommend seeing it! You might be pleasantly surprised like we were! I would give it 4.5/5 stars.
