The Sting of Justice by Cora Harrison is one of my new favourite books, I think. While I love cozies, normally they are not my favourite books as they are quick reads. However, Harrison definitely give more meat to her readers.
I have studied early Irish law in some depth, and so I am familiar with the oddities of it. The main focus of this book is bechbretha -a text that is focused on laws relating to bees. I hate bees with a passion but I think it is fascinating that they devoted entire tracts to bees. It is difficult to imagine now but bees were so important that it actually was necessary. Harrison includes portions of law tracts at the beginning of each chapter which really adds to the book.
This isn’t quite as “easy-going” as most cozies, but it is a nice change. Mara is fleshed-out as a character, and Harrison develops the other characters as well. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in medieval Ireland, mysteries, or historical fiction!
