Although this is two days early, we are about to kick off Women’s History Month 2023! In Canada, it is not until October. However, I have a plethora of readers from the UK and the US where it is Women’s History Month, and quite frankly, I like celebrating it twice. (Given that both March and October have 31 days, we have much to work with.) In addition to my regular series, I will be focusing on women and women’s history for the next month. Ahead of Wednesday, let’s look at Women’s History Month 2023 on An Historian About Town!
Women’s History Month 2023
Women in Culture
While I often do focus on women as my culture posts tend to be on ballet, a female-dominated art form, I will specifically be focusing on female figures in ballet history this month. In May 2022, I focused on Margot Fonteyn for the entire month. However, Fonteyn is only the tip of the women’s history-iceberg in ballet. Many dancers influenced the ballet and performing arts world, but many also made significant contributions to the wider world. Ballet companies are still largely led by men, and choreography tends to be a male-dominated field. It is time to recognise the women who have pushed into these spaces!
Women From History
Oftentimes the historical figures that I feature on An Historian About Town are female. However, this month I will solely be focusing on female historical figures. I will be drawing on different areas of life and society, so hopefully, there is something for everyone.
This is also the perfect month for me to launch my new series! While I have covered many monarchs of England and Great Britain for my Monarch of the Month series, I will be starting a Consort of the Month series. Each month I will be exploring the life of a different consort and everything that she accomplished. And for those that prefer a wider map, I will not be limiting myself to solely Britain with this series!
Books By Women About Women
We cannot forget our Book Bites on Wednesdays. Throughout Women’s History Month, I will be featuring books that are written by female authors about female figures. Again, this is a fairly regular occurrence here but it will be each Wednesday in March! I have not decided 100% yet- I may continue these posts into April because I am having a difficult time making cuts.
Women in Fashion History
Much like ballet, although women play a large role in fashion and have for centuries, it still is largely dominated by men. (At least when it comes to positions of authority and management.) For Style File Friday in March, the spotlight will be on women in fashion history. I have some royal jewellery posts continuing on (ahead of the coronation), and some designer-focused posts, as well.
