Kensington Palace is an interesting place to visit. The Stuart and Georgian history of the Palace is quite prominent (and my favourite part) and most of what visitors see. However, the Palace is also very firmly associated with modern royals, including the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Princess Margaret, and the late Diana, Princess of Wales. There is typically a modern royal exhibition, but there are also a few lovely nods to Diana, Princess of Wales that are hidden if you take a few moments to poke around. The Princess Diana wallpaper is one of my favourites, and has an interesting story behind it…
The late Diana, Princess of Wales is a controversial figure in modern royal history. Although she is much beloved by many, she holds a complicated spot. However, I think that it is wonderful that there are touching tributes to Diana throughout Kensington Palace. I was lucky enough to see the Diana: Her Fashion Story exhibition before it closed in February 2019, and outside of the exhibition space, there is a lovely picture of Diana. The wallpaper is pretty incredible, though!
This wallpaper is on the ground floor of the palace, quite close to the gift shop. (If you ask them, they can probably tell them where you can find it.) This wallpaper is gorgeous to look at, but it is the story behind it that I find so interesting. It is made of watercolour sketches of famous photos of Diana, and you can actually spot famous photos. In the upper left corner of the photo above, you can see the princess in a Fair Isle sweater for engagement photos. In the middle right, you can see a sketch of her holding William. Although it isn’t a massive part of Kensington, I think it is quite beautiful and well-worth finding!
