Develop Your Daily Makeup Routine, Style File Friday

Having a daily make up routine can make a big difference in your mornings- just like having a uniform for your wardrobe, knowing exactly what you are going to do with your skincare and makeup can save you a lot of time and trouble in the long run! Mornings can be hectic and rushed at the best of times, and nailed down routines cut down on those choices and variables that eat up our time and help us put our best foot forward. Today I’m going to share what my own routine is and how to develop your daily makeup routine!

I don’t believe that anyone needs to be caked in makeup to be seen by any living creature; in fact, I personally prefer a very natural and light hand with make up. No matter what, I think that a clean and moisturised face is a must, for both presentation and health purposes. This is guide is intended to help you with developing your own routine for day-to-day life, not for events, stage makeup, or anything to that degree.

Determine How Much “Face” You Need

This is different for everyone, and there are several factors that can affect this; everyone likes to be “done up” to a certain degree. These can be broken down into two different categories, personal and circumstantial. In terms of personal, that is strictly what you like and need! For some people, they don’t feel ready to go out into the public until their eye lashes are curled, other people absolutely need a bold lip colour, and some people don’t need anything at all. There isn’t a right or wrong answer, but much like figuring out what clothing you actually like wearing, you need to actually think about what makeup makes the most difference for you.

Circumstantial factors would be what is expected of you by others, and what is dictated by commitments. Depending on your contract and requirements for work, you may be expected to wear a certain amount of makeup at work. It also may be unspoken, and more a general trend in your field. A lot of professional fields can (officially or unofficially) require makeup to project a certain image. I have to say, I do notice when everyone is wearing makeup and one person is wearing none; in any case, a little bit can go a long way for you.

What is Your Feature

We all like to feature different things about ourselves, including with our makeup. While one person might insist on spending 10 minutes combing and filling their eyebrows each morning, the next might always make sure they have the exact shade of lipstick on hand. For me, I always want to have an even skin tone and a little bit of blush. it’s nothing crazy, but it is what makes me feel polished and comfortable!

I would recommend limiting yourself to showcasing one or two features no matter where or when you are, but picking one to focus on will let you become quick and efficient at that one feature, and will help you distinguish your day-to-day makeup from a full face.

Know what you like having and what you don’t like having on during the day- I detest having lipstick get all over everything (including my teeth and skin), so skipping lipstick most of the time is key for me!I A lot of people prefer having full and thick eyelashes; do you like to have false eyelashes on to feel comfortable, or does mascara and curling do the trick?

Practice, Practice, Practice

If you are one of those people who can watch a YouTube or Instagram makeup tutorial and immediately master the look, kudos to you! (What is your secret??) However, if you are anything like me, learning new makeup skills is baffling. Highlighting, contouring, multi-colour eye shadow looks, cat eye wings, all things that take a decent amount of skill and technique to accomplish. Setting yourself a routine means that you can become more than proficient at what you want to feature, and feel comfortable with it all!

Decide exactly how much time you have to do your makeup in an average morning- I give myself 11 minutes for grooming in the morning, with 6 minutes for hair and 5 minutes for makeup. I spot apply foundation, I use a lighter eye shadow, a hint of blush, a little bit of mascara, and then I’m done! I haven’t always been able to apply it so quickly but with enough practice, I got it nailed down. Take a bit of time on the weekend or on a day off, and see how quickly you can get it done!

Next week I will be sharing my favourite products that I use on a daily basis!

Please continue to send me your style questions and conundrums! I have several posts queued up to go to answer everyone who has already submitted, and researching and planning style and wardrobes is one of my favourite things- you can leave your questions in the comments, send me an email at anhistorianabouttown@gmail.com, or DM me on Instagram!
