Homemade Dog Treats

If you have ever had a puppy, you will quickly learn that healthy and nutritious dog treats are far more expensive than the most premium dog food, as you can easily go through 100+ in one puppy class! I was doing research on alternatives to commercial training treats when one of my coworkers made training treats herself and brought them in for all of our dogs- these are an easy and nutritious way to train your dog at home and possibly use up some leftovers around your house.

Peanut Butter Banana Dog Treats

If you are anything like me, half of the time you will end up with a leftover banana and you don’t know what to do with it! (You can only freeze so many for smoothies…) This will use up those leftover bananas, and use your kitchen staples of oats and peanut butter to make a basic treat for your dog. This is a very easy to make recipe, and has been a hit with every dog that I have given them to! (It is also grain free, which a lot of dogs require.)

Peanut Butter Banana Dog Treats

-2 cups rolled oats, ground to fine powder
-1/3 cup of peanut butter (checking for Xylitol)
-1 ripe banana mashed

Instructions

1. Mix oats, peanut butter, and banana in stand mixer until dough ball forms.
2. Roll out to less than 1/2 inch thick.
3. Cut with cookie cutters for larger treats, or use sharp knife to cut into smaller, training treats.
4. Bake at 350°F for 20-30 minutes, until bottoms are golden brown.
5. Allow to cool fully before packing in an airtight container.

Smiling westie puppy

Agnes is a big fan, so far! We can’t bring anything with peanut butter to puppy class as it is in a nut free facility, but these are perfect at home. (I’ve been asked by a few people, we mostly use the Zuke’s training treats in chicken when we go to class!) Because you are making them yourself, you can make them to the size that works for your own dog.

What is your dog’s favourite treat? And do you have any homemade treats to share?

Interesting, I might give these a try. So far food doesn’t seem to work all that well for training my dog. Crazy, I know. Every book, trainer, video says use treats. Pieces of chicken work a bit, but not if there’s something he’d really rather do.

Our instructor has told us that some dogs are treat motivated, some are toy motivated, and some are praise motivated, so you might be dealing with praise or toy!!

My dog loves simple treats like an apple slice or a piece of carrot. He thinks he likes cucumbers and looks at you like he NEEDS them in his life and if you don’t give him a piece then he will most surely die, then he takes it, flops it around in his mouth, spits it on the floor and comes back to you with the same look haha.
