Life is incredibly busy for me right- it is our craziest time at work, advising for sorority recruitment takes up a good chunk of my time, and sleep seems to be at a premium. Still, I’ve been trying my hardest to focus on finding the little things and keeping my sanity- it seems that when I’m overloaded and exhausted my mental and physical health take a huge dive (as I’m sure it does for many people). Today’s post is all about taking care of you and making sure you have what you need to stay sane!
Book Time with Yourself
There are so many of us that have work, family, friends, volunteering, and a myriad of other things on the go in our lives. Although we might like to think that we can handle it all without taking a single breath, it turns out that every single one of us does in fact need at least a little bit of time to ourselves where we don’t have to be doing anything. Take the extra step and book it into your planner or Google calendar- ensure that periodically you are setting time aside for you, and that you aren’t bumping it for anything else. Women especially are prone to this, as we often believe that we have to be everything to everyone at all times. Well, you have be you to yourself, because no one else will do it for you! Maybe it is 20 minutes a day that you read or simply enjoy a cup of tea, maybe it’s a quiet Sunday morning before anyone else gets up, or maybe it’s one day a month that you give yourself the whole day to relax and do as much or as little as you want. In any case, you need to make sure that you have time for you set aside!
Unless you are the most minimalistic person on the planet, you probably have a book that you bought but didn’t read, you probably have a half coloured colouring book, or a there is probably at least one movie that you meant to get around to watching but haven’t yet for whatever reason. You bought these things for a reason (or received them as a gift), so it’s time to dig in and enjoy them! There is also something to be said for not having to go out to find your entertainment when you are already exhausted and feeling run down. If you have a close friend in a similar situation, trade your favourite books to see what the other loves about it, or pull out your old favourite movies and have a marathon together- there’s something comforting able being nostalgic with a friend! (If in your digging you find things that you once thought you would be interested but now aren’t, it’s also the perfect time to give it away or donate it- clutter is no one’s friend…)
And if there is nothing around that strikes your fancy in the least, head out- I’m not advocating running yourself into debt to buy whatever has ever struck your fancy, but allow yourself some small splurges! Last weekend I allowed myself two small splurges that are going to pay off for months to come, and I’m pretty happy that I finally pulled the trigger on them. I love Coal and Canary candles, but sometimes I’m a little hesitant to drop $30 CAD on a candle. However, once I did more research into candles (because I’m the type of person who does research on candles), I realised that unless you are buying paraffin, unscented candles, you are most likely paying at least $20 CAD for a candle that burns for 50+ hours. The three wick, 60 hour candles from Bath and Bodyworks are $26/candle, and those are paraffin- Coal and Canary are a local, Winnipeg-based company that create soy candles (with wood wicks)! For an extra $4, I can get a candle that burns for just as long and is much better for the environment. I also grabbed a new dessert cookbook, Bobbette and Belle! I’ve been eyeing it up for a while and I had a giftcard that I’ve been saving, and now I’ve got some dates with myself to make some scones, cupcakes, and cookies.
Endorphins are Key
You know what helps you sleep better, have higher energy levels, and general better overall well being? Yes, that’s right, exercise! I find that the fall and winter is when we tend to bury ourselves inside and begin the hibernation on our couch, but fall is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy the weather without being heinously warm. Go for walks, run through a maze, or try playing some games for Thanksgiving or Halloween! This is also a great time to take advantage of back to school sales that are offered at gyms and studios- they often aren’t limited to students, and it’s usually only for a few months. Never tried hot yoga but are interested? 4-8 weeks at half price is the best way to try it out without committing to a full year’s membership or an expensive class card! Don’t let your physical and mental well-being go down the tube, make it a priority. This is the perfect time of year to get a jump start on any resolutions you might have before the gym gets busy! If you are finding it a struggle, enlist a friend or two to keep you track with it- make a date and stick to it 🙂
