Slowing Dressing the Holidays, Style Saturday- 5 November 2016

We all know that there are two camps of people, those that get into the holiday spirit early and those that are strictly December folks. I am not ashamed to admit that I am firmly entrenched in the former, and I am a proud elf through and through! Canadian Thanksgiving was the second Monday in October, so Halloween and Christmas are really the only big holidays afterwards in the fall up here. Getting into the holiday spirit keeps me cheerful and happy at a busy time of year! One way that I enjoy celebrating is styling myself accordingly. Yes, I have in-your-face Christmas sweaters with bells to let you know that I am there, but those are reserved for December- November is all about subtlety. How do I do that?

This is my third year in a row at work that I make it a challenge to wear red or green (or both) every single day in December! Lucky for me, red and green are my favourite colours, but it does take a good deal of forethought and planning. November is all about the single element here and there, that give a little bit of holiday without hitting you over the head with it. I try to limit overt signs to Fridays, to take it slowly. The first thing I’m going to start with?

Kate Spade Navy Glitter Keds.jpg

My Kate Spade Navy Glitter Keds! Obviously I make sure to only wear these in the office, and trade them out for more appropriate footwear if meetings call, but these are perfect for the holidays. I plan on rocking gingerbread man socks beneath these and enjoying my Hot Chocolate and Santa’s Secret teas from David’s to keep the energy high as the weather gets colder and the skies get darker.

After Remembrance Day on November 11, the sweaters are coming out. While my #elfieselfie sweater will remain in the closet until December, the fair isle sweater and sequined reindeer will be making appearances! I plan on pairing the light grey and white fair isle sweater with a red plaid shirt; perhaps that will be a bit more “wintery” than “holiday” but I don’t think that is too much of an issue for November. I’m all about the cozy and casual for Fridays at work, and also about not freezing due to the fact that I’m an iguana that can’t heat itself properly- ENTER SWEATERS.

And, in order to improve my own skills, I’m going to attempt to “holidate” (aka holiday update) my make up! I’ve been thinking of attempting to work highlighting into my make up routine, but every time I start to think about it I see the price tag and then do a strict 180 back to my same old boring look. One of my co-workers is one of those people that could work as  a make up artist recently gave me a make up hack for highlighting, though- use eyeshadow as a highlighter. My mind was blown. That probably speaks to my make up naivety but this is a fantastic solution! I’m hoping to jazz up my look for the holidays and all of the accompanying pictures. In the next few weeks I’m going to be trying tutorials and different looks out.

Beauty gurus, please link any highlighting tutorials you might have to share! (If it’s for someone who has never seen make up… well, that’s probably a-okay.) And everyone, how do you show your holiday spirit early on?

Until tomorrow,
The Historian!
