We are back with week three of my #ShowYourPurpose series focusing on the Alpha Gamma Delta Purpose. Every line hones in on a different aspect of being a well-rounded woman and this week we are focusing on our social connections and abilities. It’s 2016; while we need connections for our professional life and career, we also need them in our friendships and personal life. Most of us need support in one way or another, and maintaining those connections allow us to support others who in turn support us. Without further adieu, line three of the Purpose…
To cultivate acquaintance with many whom I meet.
I find that there are typically two large groups of people who join Greek organisations; those who are social and love meeting people, and those that are less social and perhaps need a bit of structure to meet people. When I was in university, I certainly fell more into the second category. Having classes of 20-30 people that were lectures made it difficult to get to know people, as there is little discussion in history courses until you get to your upper level seminars. It can be hard and lonely going through university, and life, all on your own, but the older we get, the more difficult it is to even be in a social setting that facilitates friendship on any level. This is probably my biggest area of growth during my time as a collegian in Alpha Gamma Delta: learning how to talk and interact with new people, and build my own network of connections.
I believe that with this line our Founders wanted us to do more than just learn someone’s name and major/occupation. That’s not cultivation. Cultivation is taking the time to get to know someone, learn about who they are and what they stand for, and thoughtfully engaging with them. Recruitment is excellent training ground for this; we have to get to know PNMs in order to make decisions on whether or not they would be a good fit for our organisation. I have used those skills in my professional and personal life, and it has made a world of difference. Actually taking the time to get to know co-workers has made work more pleasant and helps others to remember who I am and what kind of worker I am. And taking the time to get to know individuals has led to some of the best people in my life, including my boyfriend and friends from Ireland. I didn’t have Alpha Gam or anything binding them to me, and while it was hard, putting myself out there to ask thoughtful questions and really learn who they are. However, they are still hugely important people in my life to this day, and I couldn’t be happier.
So, what have I done this week to cultivate acquaintances with many whom I meet? To start off, I consciously talked to people at work that I don’t usually. We all mingle in the kitchen at work, and I usually use that time to take a few minutes to myself. However, instead I actually asked people what they did on the weekend, how their kids were, what their partner is up to. I found out that a few people are volunteering for different causes for the holidays that I would love to take part in! I also found out that one of my coworkers is an alumna of a different Greek organisation, small world that it is. I also went a few moments early to each of my gym classes at lunch, and actually introduced myself to the people who are beside me. While we aren’t really able to talk during class, it was quite nice to get to know the women that I see in gym class three and four days a week!
I’ve decided now that the contest will be solely on Instagram! I think that it is a fantastic way to quickly share with each other and with the outside world. What do you have to do?
