Cozynookbks, one of my absolute favourite book blogs, has nominated me to answer the questions in the Mid- Year Book Freak Out Tag! I was really excited to answer these questions; my personal reading updates are great but given that I read a fair amount, it’s nice to review the 40+ books I have already thus far in 2016 while still looking forward to what is coming out in later half of the year!
Best Book You’ve Read Yet in 2016
Honeymoon Hotel, Hester Browne- I’m a huge fan of chick-lit! No, it might not change the world, but it lets me escape and relax. Hester Browne is my favourite chick-lit author, and possibly one of my favourite authors, period. Rosie is an event manager for the Bonneville Hotel- while it used to be a go-to hotel, it has slowly been forgotten. Rosie is working to bring it back to its former glory, but also has to contend with the owner’s freewheeling son. Chaos ensues! I just loved escaping to the Bonneville; something I love about chick-lit is that you are often taken to somewhere that you might actually be. I was lucky enough to spend a few hours at the Bonneville!
Best Sequel You’ve Read Yet in 2016
China Rich Girlfriend, Kevin Kwan- I loved Crazy Rich Asians. I picked it up on a whim when Kobo had it on sale. I saw it when I worked in a bookstore, and for a few years after. I figured if it was still this popular, there was something to it! I will admit to knowing little to nothing about Asian society in general, let along a specific grouping in Singapore. It is fiction, but it seems to be fairly accurate to what actually happens. And it blew my mind. What is it like to go shopping when you have literally billions of dollars?? What things and activities occupy your time?? Turns out, the same mundane things as the rest of us. Money, work, family, friends, and gossip about all of the above, although the gossip seems to be the main focus. I listened to the audiobook of China Rich Girlfriend, I knew I had to find out what happened in the next instalment of Nick and Rachel! I thought that this was an excellent follow-up novel; you are introduced to new characters while still seeing the old, and slowly integrating the old and new until the story is again cohesive. All around well-written and entertaining!
New Releases You Haven’t Read Yet But Want To
Eligible (The Austen Project #4), Curtis Sittenfeld
Books of a Feather, Kate Carlisle
Most Anticipated Release of the Second Half of 2016
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne, John Tiffany- If someone between the ages of 18 and 30 doesn’t say Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, I will be surprised. (Now that I’ve said that, though, I’m guessing a hundred people who don’t want to read it will find this post haha.)
Royal Wedding, Meg Cabot- I adored this series when I was younger, and this book was a huge disappointment. A lot of talk about sex in a book intended to introduce a tween book series….
I honestly can’t say that any book this year has surprised me.
Favourite New Author
Jojo Moyes- I read Me Before You (years later than everyone else…), After You, and The Girl You Left Behind within a month. Jojo has a talent with words and storytelling that envelopes you and draws you in so that you cannot put it down. Kudos to her, she is a simply talented storyteller!
Newest Fictional Crush
I’ve read more non-fiction than I usually do, no crushes here! I am loving getting to know Jen Lancaster again, though.
Newest Favourite Character
It is a one-off, so I don’t know if I will get to see her again, but I loved Rosie from Honeymoon Hotel! I’m hoping that Hester Browne will revisit the Bonneville and Rosie’s life as an event manager, I just loved reading this.
Book That Made You Cry
The Tao of Martha, Jen Lancaster- Jen has a reputation of being an asshole, a bitch, a snob, a jerk, whatever you can think of. But you know what she is? Honest. And that is rare. I think that she is hilarious, and realistic about who is she is. Sign me up! The Tao follows her year of attempting to live like Martha Stewart, while also following her Pitbull Maise’s fight for life. Jen could not have a bigger heart for her dogs, and my heart broke for her going through this awful pain. You will laugh and cry with The Tao!
Book That Made You Happy
I Don’t Know What You Know Me From, Judy Greer- I listened to this self-narrated audiobook while we were in Banff for the May long weekend. Now, when I see this book, I think of walking throughout the quiet streets of Banff while listening to a hilarious actress share her memoirs. Judy is a talent actor and writer, and this is just purely enjoyable!
Favourite Book to Film Adaptation
The Princess Diaries, for certain! While the movie and book are very different, they are both very successful and very fun. If anything, the movie is slightly better because it’s a touch more lighthearted!
Favourite (Book) Post You Have Done This Year
Most Beautiful Book You’ve Bought This Year
In Good Taste, Kate Spade- Everything that Kate Spade does is on purpose, and the perfect blend of classic, elegance, whimsy, and modern. The wine glass stain is a perfect touch for a coffee table book!
What Books Do You Need to Read By the End of the Year
I’m sticking with the above Eligible, Books of a Feather, and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child! Otherwise, my To-Read list is waaaaaay too long to be gathered here… I should probably edit that.
Thank you again to Cozynookbks for the nomination!! I really enjoyed looking back through everything I’ve read! Even though I haven’t read that many books thus far (in comparison to those people who read 120+ in a year), my mind has moved onto newer books- it is lovely to go back and think on them again. It’s also great fun to look and see what books you are really excited to read in the near future!
