I danced from the time I was yea high until I was 21. I was working through my vocational RAD exams when I stopped. I don’t regret stopping when I did. I had to wait for five to ten minutes every morning when I got up for my feet to stop hurting enough to walk on and for my hips to loosen up enough to move. After a point (no pun intended), it doesn’t matter how much stretching you do, your body simply won’t put up with everything anymore. I still have the delightful pleasure of arthritis in my hips, ankles, and feet. However, I miss ballet something terribly, and it is time I went back. There are a few reasons why I think it is time.
1) This is a fairly superficial reason, but my quads are getting pretty bulky. (I will be back to running at zero resistance.) Ballet is fantastic for lengthening your muscles.
2) Running is great, but doesn’t really require my brain. Yoga is making me realise that I really miss “smart” exercise- I miss getting to think about a million different things at once. After a ballet class, your body is exhausted and so is your mind. It’s a nice feeling, you really feel like you have worked.
3) I just miss all of it. You don’t do something six days a week for two decades to forget it, it’s a part of you. Ballet affects the way that you do everything, the way that you hold yourself, the way you think about things, the way that you approach things. It’s time I get back to that.
I have decided to do the adult summer classes with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet to get back into it. I can either do once or twice a week for five weeks, I haven’t decided yet! I did take class once a week at UCD, but that was a drop-in class that wasn’t overly challenging. I am really happy with how I have progressed with yoga, and I feel much more solid now. I feel that my strength from yoga is really going to help me going back to ballet. I am going to start stretching more, in addition to yoga, and slowly working up to doing a barre. Fingers crossed, wish me luck!
