We are nearing the end of my Purpose recap (though not the end of Fraternity Friday!). This week’s line? “To possess high ideals and to attain somewhat unto them.” It is as though our Founders are speaking directly to my Type A, go-getter, over-achieving self. This is probably my favourite line of the AΓΔ Purpose for a couple of reasons.
First of all, I feel like everything is encompassed in this line. Academics? Health? Leadership? Sisterhood? You can have high ideals for allllll of those. Life typically doesn’t let us focus on one tiny, singular component- we are constantly working at and juggling numerous things at the same time. I personally take this to mean that I can be working towards multiple goals at one time. There is nothing saying that I can’t try to read 100 books in a year while also trying to work up to running 4 miles in 20 minutes. (Note: My actual goals are close, but not these actual numbers. If I could achieve those goals, write a blog post for every day, and continue to be a person, I’m pretty certain I would actually be a robot.) I find that working towards more than one goal at a time helps to remind me that I am striving to be a well-rounded person.
Secondly, we are striving to “attain somewhat unto them”, not “getting to that ideal or else….”. Our Founders were human beings, just like us. (Or were they? They created an entire Fraternity.) They understood that we aren’t going to reach every single goal we set. And that is a-okay. Every day at the gym, I set a distance goal in my head. If I decide I want to run three miles, and I only run 2 1/2, is it a wasted try? Certainly not. I got up and kept moving, maintained my endurance, and I still ran. As a particularly intense perfectionist, I find it quite difficult to ease up on myself. I am more understanding towards others, but I find it difficult to be forgiving with myself. This section of the line really helps me remember that the attempt is worth just as much as achieving the goal itself.
In other exciting Alpha Gam related news, I now have a Pearl Sister from the Coe College Colony! More on this soon!
