Fraternity Friday: There are a lot of parts to being a GOOD person

This weeks brings us a particularly dense line of the Alpha Gamma Delta Purpose: To hold truth inviolable, sincerity essential, kindness invaluable. Every word in this sentence serves a purpose (ha HA!!). What jumps out first? 1. Truth. 2. Sincerity. 3. Kindness. These are three elements that should abound in all of our lives. I believe that truth is crucial in life, but must be tempered with sincerity and kindness. I personally don’t find it hard to tell the truth to people- does your dress look less than good? Yes. Did you put in as much effort as you could have? No. Do I want to go out to the bar? Not even remotely. I have to try to remember that I shouldn’t just bluntly state the truth, and move on. I try my hardest to deliver whatever truth it is with all possible kindness- it makes the world of a difference. We should want to state the truth (henceforth the “sincerity essential” bit), but also recognise that while we need to hear the truth, sometimes we need it to be delivered kindly. Part of being a good person is caring for those people around you, and that includes taking care to think about the delivery as much as the truth itself. The kindness is invaluable, and should not be forgotten.

It’s actually fairly amazing to think that our Founders pondered, deliberated, and discussed every aspect of womanhood (and peoplehood, quite frankly), and put the thought and care into writing our Purpose. I believe that this thought and care should be relayed into how we treat others!

Until tomorrow,
The Historian!
