To welcome the opportunity of contributing to the world’s work in the community where I am placed because of the joy of service thereby bestowed and the talent of leadership multiplied” Guess what? Our founders expected us to not be terrible people- go figure! I was personally drawn to Greek life in order to be able to volunteer more. To be honest, we did not do too much philanthropy while I was a collegian, which was disappointing. However, this has only strengthened my resolve to be engaged with my community now! How have I been doing this?
Last spring, I organised and held a tea for the Children’s Hospital here. I personally spent time there so many years ago, and so have a lot of us. I gained valuable experience and insight from planning the event, and it is an amazing cause. I don’t know if I will do it this year- it was a lot of money out of pocket, and it was just my mom and I doing most it- but I am grateful for the opportunity to do something! If there is a cause close to your heart, you will be able to find a way to be involved.
I currently am waiting for my volunteering project to start up. My brother and I are going to be volunteering for the Winnipeg Humane Society, another wonderful cause. It is a no-kill shelter, and when Loki ran away that first night, they took such good care of him. We have our training later in the month, and I am very excited to help out in any way I can! Money is always fantastic (I can’t say no to those Humane Society bakesales) but giving your time to an organisation or cause is also a fantastic way to give back. I’m also excited to learn more about the workings of a non-profit organisation!
I am hoping to find a service project for Junior Circle (and any other Alpha Gams in the area) to do, fingers crossed we can find something that fits!!
Do you volunteer anywhere? Do you have a preference in the kind of volunteering you do?
