History in the Making

ΑΓΔ International Reunion Day, 2017

April is one of my favourite times of year, as it means that it is time for Alpha Gamma Delta sisters everywhere to celebrate International Reunion Day together. It is an event that happens every spring that allows us to celebrate our eleven wonderful founders, our sisters, and what the organisation means to each of us. Our International Headquarters picked a fantastic theme, “Empowering Women to Lead the Way”! It is a strong and important message that links every one of us together while encouraging us to keep our individual strengths.
Earlier in March, I took a step back from our alumnae group. For my own mental and physical health, I had to take some time for myself and eliminate some of the stress in my life. That means for the first time in a while, I wasn’t planning an Alpha Gam event. While I love Alpha Gam, this made it a much more enjoyable event for me! I’m okay at event planning, but I typically don’t enjoy the event and I’ve probably forgotten a few small things here and there. It was really important to me to be able to simply enjoy International Reunion Day, and it meant a lot to me!
We started off the day with Initiation for four new members. For anyone who isn’t in a Greek organisation, Initiation is simply a nice ceremony where you learn all of the things that keep us tied together. There’s nothing creepy or weird, and I always wonder if someone else saw it, what would it look like for someone who isn’t invested in the meaning? I know that some people don’t love sitting through it but it’s very meaningful to me and I always try to make it whenever possible.

Something that I truly appreciate about my membership in Alpha Gamma Delta is that it has given me a lot of confidence. While I was never truly introverted, I wouldn’t always go out of my way to talk to other people and make connections. Alpha Gam has taught me (and continues to teach me) that I do have it in me to reach out and meet new people, and make meaningful connections. I think that that is something that is truly lacking in my generation as a whole, and I believe that sororities are a fantastic resource.
I know that there are people everywhere who claim that anyone in a sorority or a fraternity is a shallow, vapid, always drinking, and overall brainless individual. I’m sure that there are members like that, as there are those people in every walk and area of life. However, many of us join for the lasting traditions, the leadership and life skills, and the personal connections. I am proud to say that I am an intelligent, hard working, creative, and dedicated person in every aspect of my life and a lot of that is due to being a member of Alpha Gamma Delta. More importantly, I believe that women should be empowering everyone- not cutting down people in specific demographics based on stereotypes and misunderstandings.
I am proud member of Alpha Gamma Delta, and I stand by everything that I have gained from it. Please feel free to ask any questions you might have about Alpha Gamma Delta, sororities, or Greek life in general!
Until tomorrow,
The Historian!
